Cape Winelands Art Route: Where World-Class Wine Meets World-Class Art

The Cape Winelands have long been celebrated for their wines, but a quieter revolution has been unfolding alongside the vineyards. Over the past two decades, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek have emerged as one of Africa's most important art corridors.

Stellenbosch: The Art of Collection

The Rupert Museum houses the private collection of Anton and Huberte Rupert — a survey of Modern South African art that few public institutions can match. SMAC Gallery has established itself as one of the country's leading contemporary spaces. Delaire Graff Estate displays over 400 works from Laurence Graff's private collection — sculptures by Dylan Lewis and Deborah Bell greeting visitors.

Franschhoek: Gallery Village

Everard Read, South Africa's oldest commercial gallery, opened its Winelands outpost in 2016. The Gallery at Grande Provence showcases painting, sculpture, ceramics, and glass. La Motte Estate adds an art-historical dimension with its permanent Pierneef exhibition.

Between the Towns

Boschendal, one of the Cape's oldest estates, now hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary African art. The drive over the Helshoogte Pass is an art experience in itself. For art travellers, the Cape Winelands offer the chance to encounter serious, ambitious art in settings of extraordinary natural beauty.
